The Word "Indie" Doesn't Mean Anything Anymore

On December 11, 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept The Game Awards with a record nine wins. Game of the Year. Best Independent Game. Best Debut Indie Game. The same studio, in the same night, treated as both industry pinnacle and scrappy newcomer.

Sandfall Interactive. 30 employees, Kepler Interactive backing, outsourced animation to Korean studios, professional QA through QLOC, voice cast including Andy Serkis, Charlie Cox, and Ben Starr. Budget reportedly under $10 million, but professionally funded from day one.

That same year, Schedule 1 sold over 8 million copies and made roughly $125 million. Made by one guy in Sydney named Tyler. No publisher. No marketing budget. It blew up because streamers found it and TikTok spread it. Both games are called "indie" sitting under the same label, in the same Steam category, on every storefront. One had professional backing from day one. The other needed to catch lightning in a bottle just to be seen.

That's the problem.

The Scale Problem

This is what "indie" covers in 2025.

The term now just means "not a subsidiary of a major publisher." Most shipped games use contractors for QA and localization. That's not what separates these tiers. The difference is infrastructure, funding source, and who carries the risk from day one.

What Indie Used to Mean

Before Steam. Before Xbox Live Arcade. Getting your game on a platform was a massive undertaking. You couldn't just release on PlayStation 2. You needed manufacturing connections, distribution deals, retail relationships, platform approval. The infrastructure to get a game in front of players simply wasn't available to small teams.

Indie games existed, but they lived in the margins. Flash games on Newgrounds, Miniclip, and Addicting Games. Mods distributed through forums. Shareware passed around on discs. The audience was there, but the path to reaching them at scale wasn't.

Then open platforms changed everything. Xbox Live Arcade launched in 2004. Steam opened to third-party developers in 2005. Suddenly, a small team could ship a game to millions of players without going through the gatekeepers. The barrier dropped from "who you know" to "what you can build." This is where the modern indie movement started. Small teams could now compete for the same audience as major publishers. The playing field wasn't level, but at least you could get on it.

Who Carried the Risk

The developers who defined what "indie" meant carried the full weight themselves.

The precursors. No clear path to making a living unless you got acquired or built your own platform.

The first generation. When the gates opened, the weight became financial.

This was what "indie" meant, carrying the full weight yourself. The funding, the development, the risk, no infrastructure to fall back on, no safety net if it failed. The term earned its cultural weight because these developers earned it.

How the Definition Drifted

Success changes things.

These aren't bad actors. Team Cherry didn't do anything wrong by making a successful game, Larian absolutely earned their success. The problem is that the term "indie" now has to cover all of them, plus solo developers hoping to make rent. The only thing separating Larian from Blizzard is a signature on a sale agreement. If Blizzard had never sold to Activision, we'd be calling them indie today.

This shift didn't happen randomly. AAA budgets exploded, a gap opened between those productions and smaller teams. Studios like Sandfall and Larian filled that space. They weren't subsidiaries, so "indie" became the default label. The gatekeepers changed too. In 2005, the barrier was physical. Disc manufacturing, retail shelf space. Now it's algorithmic. Steam discovery, social media reach, streamer attention. Thirty-five million in VC money buys access to those systems. A solo developer is hoping they notice him. Players reinforced it because they care about how a game feels, not who funded it, and studios embraced it because "indie" carries marketing value. Nobody wants to be called "mid-tier" or "AA." None of this is a conspiracy, just language shifting under market pressure.

The Publisher Question

Then there are the "indie publishers." Devolver Digital. Raw Fury. TinyBuild. Team17. These companies focus on smaller games, but they're still publishers. When you sign with one of them, they handle marketing, provide funding, manage PR, and take care of distribution. The hardest parts of being independent get outsourced.

Publisher backing changes who carries the risk, and that's assuming a fair deal. The reality is that many of these publishers prey on inexperienced solo developers, offering poor terms that take advantage of desperation and inexperience. Some of them position themselves as saviors while extracting value the developer will never see.

This doesn't make those games bad. Many are excellent. But there's a meaningful difference between "solo dev hoping a streamer notices their game" and "small studio with professional publishing infrastructure handling the business side." The financial risk profile and path to visibility are completely different. If indie originally meant carrying the full weight yourself, then signing with a publisher, even an indie-focused one, changes your situation fundamentally. You're still making the game. But you're alone in the market.

Blue Prince, one of the best-reviewed games of 2025, was published by Raw Fury. Schedule 1 had no publisher at all. Both get called "indie." But the developer of Schedule 1 had to figure out visibility, marketing, and distribution entirely on his own. The Blue Prince developer had professional support. Neither is wrong. But they're different situations that the current definition doesn't distinguish.

Different Weight Classes

Here's what the category looks like now.

What this means is that these are different weight classes. A high school athlete competing against professionals, but they all get called "indie." The same word covers a solo developer in Sydney hoping a streamer notices his game and a 30-person studio with Kepler backing. It's hard to be a "scrappy underdog" when the underdogs you're compared against have Andy Serkis in the recording booth.

The Counterargument

The strongest defense of the current system goes like this. "Indie" has always meant ownership independence, not scale. Awards celebrate creative outcomes, not production hardship. Players don't care whether a developer suffered. They care whether the game is good. Sandfall owns their IP, they're not a subsidiary, and they made a critically acclaimed game. That logic holds.

The problem is that institutional systems still treat it as a single competitive category. Steam's "Indie" tag puts Larian next to solo devs. The Game Awards puts Sandfall in the same pool as Dogubomb. Games media covers them with the same framing.

If the industry explicitly said "indie means ownership, not resources," that would at least be honest. Instead, the term borrows cultural weight from developers who took real economic risk while applying it to studios that never faced that risk. It's a structural problem the industry has chosen to embrace, blaming individual studios misses the underlying issue.

What Actually Separates Them

Budget doesn't work as a dividing line. Warhorse Studios made Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 to a quality standard comparable to any AAA release. $40 million. If that same game were developed in San Francisco or Los Angeles, it would have cost two or three times as much. GSC Game World built S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in Ukraine, where developer salaries are a fraction of US rates. Raw dollar amounts don't translate across global economies. A $10 million game made in France with Korean outsourcing has nothing in common with a game made by five people in Sydney on savings and credit cards.

Scale doesn't work either. Warhorse has around 250 employees but still feels different from Ubisoft. Larian has 400+ but claims the indie label. Team size alone doesn't capture the distinction people are actually pointing at.

What separates them is infrastructure access.

Major outsourcing studios. Orchestras. Professional production houses. Big QA teams. Localization pipelines. Publishing deals that open doors to marketing channels, platform relationships, and visibility. This is the infrastructure that used to be reserved for AAA development. Now studios like Sandfall and Larian tap into it while calling themselves indie.

A solo dev isn't contracting QLOC for QA. They're not booking orchestra sessions. They're scouting individual artists on social media, maybe working with a two-person outsourcing operation, handling their own marketing through Discord and Twitter. The infrastructure available to them is fundamentally different.

The real question is whether you built your infrastructure or started with it. Team Cherry built theirs, just three people in Adelaide. Figuring it out as they went. By Silksong, they had resources, orchestras, contractors, a guaranteed audience. But they earned that position through Hollow Knight's success. The infrastructure came after. Sandfall started with it. Kepler backing. Korean animation studios. QLOC. Hollywood voice cast. Professional infrastructure from day one. It's a different situation from what Team Cherry built.

"Indie" used to describe developers who lacked access to professional infrastructure and had to build everything themselves. That's the cultural weight the term carries. When studios that started with infrastructure use the same label, they're borrowing weight they didn't earn.

The Triple-I Band-Aid

"Triple-I." That's the industry's answer. High-production independent titles. Games like Expedition 33 and Baldur's Gate 3. Meant to separate them from solo devs and micro-teams. If "indie" still communicated scale or resources, you wouldn't need a modifier. Triple-I is a linguistic band-aid. It allows studios to keep the valuable 'indie' credibility while signaling to investors that they are safe bets. But it changes nothing where it matters.

On Steam, on PlayStation, on every storefront, these games are still categorized as indie. Same tag. Same category. Triple-I is industry jargon, but the platforms haven't adopted it. A solo dev in Sydney is still sitting in the same bucket as Larian. It's the same market pressure that drifted the definition in the first place.

But a term the industry uses while the platforms ignore doesn't fix the foundational problem. It just gives people a word to use in interviews.

Bottom Line

The "Indie" tag on Steam is a folder where the industry puts everything that doesn't have a Ubisoft logo on it. It's a junk drawer. One term covers a solo developer in Sydney hoping a streamer notices his game and a 400-person studio in Belgium with $100 million in backing. I've laid out a framework. Infrastructure access. Who carries the risk. Whether you built it or started with it. By that definition, there's a clear line between someone like Tyler and someone like Sandfall. But here's the thing. It doesn't matter.

Definitions aren't decided by frameworks. They're decided by usage. If enough people call something "indie," that's what it becomes. And right now, gamers don't define indie by infrastructure or risk or economic reality. They define it by feel, by aesthetic, by what it isn't.

Expedition 33 feels indie because it isn't a live service game. What I really mean, it isn't designed to extract maximum revenue from every player interaction. It doesn't feel like the bloated, monetized, focus-grouped products that AAA has come to represent. Neither does Hades 2. Neither does Baldur's Gate 3. They feel like passion projects, so they get the label.

This is what happened to indie music. It started as a production reality, small labels and self-funded. Then it became a sound, eventually a vibe, and now it's a genre tag on Spotify. The economic meaning got absorbed into aesthetic meaning. The same thing is happening to games. I hate it. But that's consumerism. That's how language works under market pressure. The original definition gets diluted until the word just means whatever the mainstream decides it means. The developers who built the brand, who carried the actual risk, who earned the cultural weight the term carries, their contribution gets flattened into a marketing category.

The only way to change that is to reject it. To refuse the label. To build something that doesn't fit the current definition and force people to find a new word for it. That takes time. It takes people willing to go against the grain, against AAA, and against the new status quo that indie has become.

Why I'm Walking Away

I'm writing this as someone working out of his home. Scraping by with whatever money I can put toward a project I'm passionate about. Building a game I want to play, hoping there's an audience for it. I have no publisher, no infrastructure, and no safety net. Not for lack of trying. Even the indie publishers are dominated by market trends, and when you're building something that doesn't fit neatly into what they're selling, you're at a disadvantage before anyone even looks at your game.

By any historical definition, that's indie. But the term has gotten so diluted over the last two decades that even if I achieve some success, I don't know if I want to be considered part of this category anymore. The original pioneers were challenging the status quo. That's what it meant to be indie. But when indie is the status quo, it feels disingenuous to call it such. I feel closer to someone like Tom Fulp than I do to the developers at Sandfall. That much is clear, and I'm absolutely not saying they did anything wrong. Maybe the term served its purpose, maybe we need a different word, maybe we're punk.

But here's the catch. By choosing "punk," I'm just picking a new word with its own marketing value. Rebellion, counter-culture, going against the grain. Calling that a definition is generous, it's a brand. And if enough people adopt it, it'll get absorbed the same way "indie" did. It becomes a genre tag, nothing more. There might not be a way out of that cycle. Every label with cultural weight becomes a target for co-option. The moment a word means something, someone will borrow that meaning to sell something else. Maybe the answer is just doing the work and letting it speak for itself.

I'm still figuring it out, but when I look at what "indie" covers in 2025, I don't see myself in it.

Generative Rendering and the Future Nobody Asked For

On March 16, 2026, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang unveiled DLSS 5 at the 'GPU Technology Conference'. The internet reacted poorly, to put it lightly. Later, when Tom's Hardware pressed him about the backlash during a Q&A session the following day, Huang claimed critics are "completely wrong", that DLSS 5 "fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI." He said it's "not post-processing at the frame level" but "generative control at the geometry level."

Days later, Nvidia's own Jacob Freeman, a GeForce Evangelist, answered questions from YouTuber Daniel Owen about how the technology actually works.

"Yes, DLSS 5 takes a 2D frame plus motion vectors as input… DLSS 5 only takes the rendered frame and motion vectors as inputs. Materials are inferred from the rendered frame… The underlying geometry is unchanged."

The CEO not only said one thing, but then adamantly defended it. His own staff confirmed the opposite within the week. That's the foundation of what we have to work with.

Let's Call It What It Is

Nvidia calls DLSS 5 "Neural Rendering", but the term is doing a lot of work to avoid a simpler one. Here's what the technology actually does. The game engine renders a frame. DLSS 5 takes that rendered 2D image and its motion vectors, feeds them into a generative AI model, and the model produces a new frame with inferred lighting, materials, and surface detail. The output replaces the original. What we should be calling this is "Generative Rendering." Previous DLSS iterations did something similar, but fundamentally different. Upscaling reconstructed a higher-resolution version of the frame the engine rendered. Frame generation interpolated between frames the engine rendered. Ray reconstruction filled in lighting data the engine was already computing. All of those completed work the engine started. DLSS 5 flips that relationship. The model takes a flat 2D frame and decides what it should look like at higher fidelity. The engine used to deliver the artist's vision. Now it's just providing a reference sketch for the model to generate over. Games have used post-processing filters for decades, that isn't new. FXAA smooths edges. Bloom simulates light bleed. Chromatic aberration mimics a camera lens. All of them modify the presentation of what the engine rendered. None of them generate new visual information that wasn't in the authored scene.

I've Been Burned Once Before

DLSS launched in 2018 as an optional performance tool. Render at a lower resolution and let the AI reconstruct the detail. The pitch was straightforward. Better frame rates without visible quality loss, it seemed like a win for everyone. Over time, developers adapted rationally. If players are running DLSS by default, and the upscaled output looks comparable to native rendering, then native resolution stops being the optimization target. Why spend cycles rendering every pixel at 4K when the upscaler handles the gap? The development pipeline shifts. You build to the upscaled output, not the native input.

Monster Hunter Wilds is what this looks like eight years later. At native 4K ultra settings, even the RTX 4090 dips into the high 40s. Turning things down doesn't help because the settings don't meaningfully scale. The only way to hit playable frame rates is upscaling and frame generation, and the game knows it. It prompts you to enable frame generation before you've even played a single hunt. Wilds isn't an isolated case. Remnant 2's developers openly admitted the game was "designed with upscaling in mind." Alan Wake 2 also listed upscaling in every tier of its system requirements, down to 1080p. Upscaling stopped being an option. It became the baseline. I've seen this pattern before, and generative rendering looks like the next iteration.

Minimum Viable Raster

During the post-announcement chaos, someone put together a meme that indirectly made the best argument against generative rendering. They took the original Mafia, the 2002 Illusion Softworks game, and ran it through a mock DLSS 5 comparison. DLSS 5 "off" shows the game as it shipped. Low-polygon characters in suit jackets, simple geometry and flat lighting. DLSS 5 "on" shows something that could pass for a game released in the last five years. Realistic fabric texture, subsurface skin detail, and accurate material definitions on the shotgun metal.

This is a meme, not an actual DLSS 5 demo to be clear, but the logic it illustrates is exactly where this is heading.

Take a moment to look at the "off" image. Every piece of information the model needs is already there. The light source direction. The color of the clothing. The material distinction between fabric and metal. The spatial relationship between the characters. The geometry communicates enough for the model to infer the rest. The 2002 art team didn't build photorealistic PBR materials. They didn't need to. The model painted them on after the fact. Now extend that logic into a production pipeline. If generative rendering becomes standard, the question every developer will ask is simple. How much raster fidelity do I actually need to provide for the model to generate a convincing output? If the answer is "significantly less than what we're currently building," then every hour spent on photorealistic asset work above that threshold is wasted labor. To be exceptionally clear, this is not because the artist is lazy, but because the pipeline doesn't require it.

This is what I'm calling Minimum Viable Raster, a term that is intentionally soulless and corporate. The lowest level of authored visual fidelity that still provides sufficient input data for the generative model to produce the desired output. If the model can turn "sixth-generation era" geometry into something that reads as modern, then every polygon and texture map above that floor is overhead.

The counterargument writes itself. More input data produces better generative output. But the architecture itself undercuts this. You're not rewarded for providing more, you're rewarded for providing enough. Upscaling already proved this. It shifted the optimization target from native resolution to whatever the upscaler can reconstruct. The incentive to build beyond that threshold disappeared. Generative rendering applies the same logic to visual fidelity itself. If the model is inferring detail from a lower fidelity input, the incentive to provide a higher fidelity one goes with it. Not just with its resolution, but the actual authored quality of the assets, lighting, and materials. No studio has shipped a game built to this philosophy yet. But the incentive structure points here, and the industry's track record shows that when a technology enables a shortcut, studios take it. Not out of malice or being lazy, but out of rational efficiency. The real question is, why would a studio invest in visual fidelity beyond what the model needs to do its job?

What Gets Lost

Assume studios adopt minimum viable raster as a production philosophy. The model handles the fidelity gap. What happens to the people who used to do that work?

The first generation of artists who mastered rasterized rendering will still have those skills. But if the studios hiring them no longer need that level of fidelity, what incentive is there for the next generation to develop them? And that question only compounds with each subsequent generation. Why would a junior artist spend years learning to build high-fidelity assets if the pipeline only requires a minimum viable input and the generative layer handles the rest? The incentive disappears. Not because the knowledge is forbidden, and not because developers are lazy, but because nothing in the system demands it.

This mechanism isn't new. Classical antiquity produced art with perspective, anatomical accuracy, and naturalistic lighting. When the institutions that demanded those skills collapsed, when patronage shifted to favor symbolic communication over naturalism, the skills atrophied over generations. They were lost because no institution required them. I'm not predicting a thousand-year dark age of game art. I'm pointing at the pattern. When institutional demand for a skill set disappears, the skills follow. If generative rendering removes the demand for high-fidelity authored assets, the skill set that produces them erodes. And once those skills are gone, the generative layer stops being an option. It becomes the only path left.

Locked In

Up until now, the standards that power real time rendering, DirectX, Vulkan, and DXR, have been vendor-agnostic. The techniques built on them, from specular and bump mapping to normal mapping, PBR, and ray tracing produced the same image regardless of who made your GPU. Your hardware determined how fast the computations happen, but it didn't drive what the output looked like.

Upscaling was the first crack in that. DLSS was Nvidia-proprietary. FSR was AMD's answer. XeSS was Intel's. They all produced slightly different outputs from the same input, but those differences were subtle. Different sharpness, different edge handling, different artifact behavior. None of them were fabricating a new image. Previous upscalers worked with what the engine gave them, generative rendering builds entirely new frames. Nvidia's model generates one output. AMD, if they build their own, generates an entirely different one based on its own training data. Any other vendor with their own proprietary model produces yet another interpretation, whether that's Intel, Sony, or anyone else. Unless the tools exist to ensure the output is identical across hardware, we're heading toward a world where different hardware shows you different games.

The frustrating part is that the open path is being built. Microsoft is actively developing Cooperative Vectors for DirectX, a cross-vendor standard for running neural networks directly inside the rendering pipeline. AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm are all involved. It's the natural extension of what DirectX and DXR have always done, giving developers vendor-agnostic tools. Nvidia shipped DLSS 5 entirely outside of that effort, through their proprietary Streamline framework, using their own model on their own hardware. The open infrastructure is being laid, but Nvidia didn't wait for it.

And that's before you account for the consumer who doesn't have access to any generative layer at all. If studios adopt minimum viable raster as their pipeline, building to a lower fidelity target with the expectation that the generative layer closes the gap, then the player without that layer doesn't get a lower settings tier. They get the reference sketch. The unfinished version. The product that was never meant to be seen on its own.

The Version I'd Welcome

I want to give this room to breathe though, because the strongest version of this counterargument is genuine. The last thing I want to do is be all doom and gloom regarding technological advancements, technology always grows and it's standard practice to grow and adapt with it.

Rendering budgets have eaten everything else in game development for two decades. The visual fidelity arms race consumed every available cycle of compute and every available hour of artist labor. During the seventh generation, games like Crysis and Red Faction: Guerrilla delivered destructible environments, physics-driven gameplay, dynamic simulations that made the world feel alive. Over the years, all of it got sacrificed on the altar of "does this screenshot look photorealistic."

If generative rendering genuinely reduces the raster overhead, that freed compute could go elsewhere. More detailed animation systems, destructible environments that respond to player interaction, AI-driven NPC behavior that isn't scripted, dynamic weather and ecosystems. Physics simulations that make explosions feel like Red Faction did in 2009, where you watched a structure come apart piece by piece and every fragment interacted with the scene in a realistic, albeit simulated, way.

There's a version of this technology that could get us there. One where the generative layer is a tool the artist controls, trained on the studio's own visual language, reinforcing the authored vision rather than overwriting it. That future is worth wanting.

Centralized Compute

Thing is, even in the best case, the math likely doesn't work the way the optimists think it does. Generative models don't stay small. Every iteration gets bigger, demands more compute to run. The raster overhead shrinks, but the model overhead grows to fill the gap. The net compute available for simulation, physics, AI-driven gameplay doesn't actually increase. It just shifts from one budget to another, in this case, from the raster input, to the generative output.

There's also a ceiling on local hardware, this is the scary part. These models could very well eventually outgrow what a consumer GPU can run efficiently in real time. When that happens the inference moves to data centers. The generative layer stops running on your machine and starts running on Nvidia's servers, using Nvidia's models, on Nvidia's infrastructure. At that point you're not just locked into a proprietary model. You're locked into a proprietary cloud, assuming your network connection is even strong enough to sustain it.

If the model runs in a data center, it doesn't matter whether the player has an RTX 5090 or a five-year-old laptop. The game ships everywhere. Lower minimum specs, wider audience, more sales. The freed compute doesn't fund better gameplay. It funds broader reach. The version worth wanting doesn't arrive because selling to everyone will always win over building something deeper.

It Ends With You

None of this was introduced to us cleanly. Jensen told the public one thing. His own employee confirmed a different reality within the week. Then he went on a podcast and agreed that AI slop is bad, after telling the press that critics were "completely wrong" days earlier.

A lot of what I've laid out here is a thought experiment. Minimum viable raster, the skill atrophy, the centralized compute path, none of that has happened yet. These are projections based on what the upscaling precedent already proved and what historical patterns show happens when incentive structures shift. I could be wrong about all of it. The idealistic version of this technology, where the artist keeps control and the freed compute goes to making games play better, that future would be genuinely good. I'd welcome it.

But I gave them the benefit of the doubt once before. With upscaling, there was a level of trust. The technology was new, the intentions seemed genuine, and there was a curiosity in seeing where it would go. Over a decade, optional became mandatory, and that trust was spent. Now they're asking for it again with generative rendering, except this time they can't even keep their story straight about what it does. The way this was introduced doesn't earn the optimistic read. It earns the pattern-based one, and the patterns, currently, all point in the same direction.

The cheapest coverts from gold-containing collections become your baseline trade-up input. If 5 cheap coverts cost less than a gold, arbitrage kicks in. Buy the cheapest coverts from any collections with golds, trade up, hope for something valuable. That's what those early traders were doing. But the random collection selection adds real risk. The broader sell-off made sense. More golds will hit the market through trade-ups. How many? Depends on how many players actually do trade-ups, which collections they target, and whether covert prices stay low enough to make the gamble worth it. The market priced in this massive supply shock, but it's way more gradual than that. It's new pressure on gold prices, not some instant flood.

Short to Medium-Term Outlook (0-24 months)

Discontinued Case Dynamics

For discontinued cases (the ones that don't drop anymore), the dynamics get interesting. Coverts get removed from circulation through trade-ups, creating scarcity. As covert prices rise, case opening becomes more profitable since coverts are the valuable output. This pushes case prices higher. They rise together to maintain equilibrium. The mixing mechanic complicates this, but only for discontinued collections that have golds. A discontinued collection's coverts might get used mostly as filler in mixed-collection trade-ups targeting other collections' knives. What this means:

The actual constraint is end-user demand. Eventually price kills demand because people can't afford it or won't pay it. The "compounding scarcity" effect works continuously. Even if opening volume drops due to capital requirements, trade-ups still consume coverts while zero new cases drop. With any consumption and no new supply, prices trend upward. The system reaches a new equilibrium with higher prices and lower volume, where case opening stays at break-even profitability, assuming demand holds at those price levels.

The Armory Factor

The Armory system deserves a mention as another covert supply source. At $15 per pass, you get 40 tokens, enough for 10 covert roll attempts at 4 tokens each. Sounds like it could impact trade-up economics. It can't, not yet anyway. Armory coverts can't be traded up to golds because the Armory doesn't include knives or gloves in its pool. Without a trade-up path to gold items, these coverts are just dead inventory with no connection to the new trade-up economy. If Valve adds golds to the Armory in future updates, this could change. But right now, the Armory doesn't matter for this analysis.

Long-Term Speculation and the Terminal

The Terminal introduces massive uncertainty. Any predictions require stacking assumptions:

Even if all that held true, predicting the impact is pure guesswork. There's a discussion worth having though. If the Terminal replaced cases and golds were only obtainable through trade-ups (not direct drops), golds would become way rarer. Instead of a 1 in 385 chance at a gold, you'd need to hit 5 coverts first at 1 in 156 each, then trade them up. That's a massive increase in the resource cost per gold. But Valve will change whatever they want, whenever they want. Drop rates, trade-up mechanics, new systems. Everything's on the table. They've already proven they'll nuke the economy without warning.

Bottom Line

What we know is straightforward. Coverts from collections with golds now have guaranteed value as trade-up fuel, and the ability to mix collections creates a globally interconnected covert market among those collections. This fundamentally changes the market structure for gold-containing collections while leaving others alone. What we can reasonably expect follows from that.

What we can't predict is everything else. Whether people buy more at lower prices, how traders will balance cost versus collection-selection risk, Valve's future moves, long-term Terminal implementation, and whether the market will behave rationally at all. These variables determine where prices actually land, and we have no reliable data to measure them. The selloff may be an overreaction, but the fundamental economics support some reduction in high-tier skin values, though the impact will be uneven across collections. The new trade-up pathway creates real pressure, but the randomness of collection selection complicates profitability calculations.

If you're holding coverts from collections with expensive golds, you're probably in a strong position because demand for those coverts will rise as targeted trade-up inputs. If you're holding extremely expensive knives from collections with cheap, plentiful coverts that can be mixed into trade-ups, some value reduction is likely permanent. The cheapest coverts from collections with golds will appreciate as they become universal trade-up fuel. Coverts from collections without golds are unaffected. Everything else is speculation dressed up as analysis.

The Workshop Connection

From a workshop artist's perspective, there's one aspect of this update that hasn't been discussed but might actually be transformative. The democratization of covert value across weapon types. Previously, Valve faced immense pressure to reserve covert rarity for meta weapons like the AK-47, M4A1-S, and AWP. These high-usage weapons drove case sales. A covert Negev or Nova? Commercial suicide. Lower weapon usage meant lower demand, which meant fewer case openings, even if golds could slightly offset that behavior. This created a rigid hierarchy where weapon popularity influenced skin rarity, constraining both Valve's curation choices and workshop artists' creative freedom.

That elaborate Negev design that would've never shipped due to its saliency? Now viable as a covert. Valve can experiment with unconventional covert selections without killing case sales. The traditional premium for AK-47 coverts over Negev coverts shrinks when both work equally as inputs for a potential Butterfly Knife. Rarity, not popularity, becomes the primary value driver.

For collectors like myself who've wanted covert skins across the entire loadout, this change opens up possibilities that seemed impossible before. My dream of a full covert loadout, once out of reach, suddenly feels achievable. This doesn't fundamentally change the market analysis above, but it represents a quiet revolution in how skins might be designed, curated, and valued going forward. The update that crashed the knife market might accidentally transform the creative ecosystem that feeds it. For workshop artists and collectors, that might be the most exciting part of all.
